About Us

EU Labour Club is part of the student wing of the Labour Party and we are one of the largest and most lively political forces on campus. We engage in a range of campaigns both in and out of university, to draw attention to issues important to our members, and to encourage student engagement with the Labour movement.

Our activities revolve around weekly meetings (see overleaf for some of this term’s events), which include debates, planning campaigns, and discussing the major political issues of the day with senior Labour politicians, both local and national. We also have a range of fun social events, aiming to put the ‘social’ into ‘socialism’!

Our members range from hardcore Blairites to die-hard Socialists, spanning all strands of opinions in the Labour Party. You will be surprised at the vigorous debates that often go on in the club! If you have concerns about the party’s current direction, joining Labour Students gives you the chance to influence the party and vote in leadership elections (!). We are the natural home at university for all leftwing students who want to be involved in politics, and we also welcome students of all nationalities and take a keen interest in foreign affairs.

Edinburgh Labour Club has an illustrious history, with senior figures such as Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the late Robin Cook, Development Secetary Douglas Alexander and Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell being previous members. We currently have an active and growing membership, and have campaigned on issues such as gay rights and opposing top-up fees in the past year, and were very active during the 2005 election, with many members helping to run the successful campaign of local MP Alastair Darling.

Meetings

Ordinary meetings of the club take place on Wednesdays of term-time at 7.30pm in Teviot Row Union. For information on other events and meetings, please check this site or get in touch to join our mailing list.
